The introduction of the series 2 cars from 09/1989 brought a significant change to the external appearance of the W124 model. Series 1 cars all featured grey bumpers (regardless of the main body colour) with no chrome and very thin rubbing strips on the doors.

Series 2 cars introduced chrome atop the bumpers, which were now a contrasting colour to the main body colour and matching door panels were added which also featured chrome strips.
